In 1921, soon after the close of the First World War, Prudence Look dreamed of establishing a hospital on Martha’s Vineyard to care for returning soldiers and all who made their homes here.

She invited several Island women and asked them each to bring a fellow. The men were instructed to bring 20 cents. Refreshments were served at the party, but when the fellows went to help themselves to cake and ice cream, Mrs. Look charged each of them 20 cents.

That was the first fund-raiser for Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

A century later, the Hospital still depends on the generosity of our community – year-round and seasonal residents, visitors, corporations, foundations and many others who care about the Vineyard – for their support in our continuing determination to provide the highest quality health care for everyone in need.

Thanks to you, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will fulfill their mission for many years to come.

Gifts of any size are deeply appreciated and rest assured, we maintain donor confidentiality at all times.

We’d lived together for more than 60 years, so moving him into a nursing home was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but I know it was the right decision. Thank goodness for Windemere…”
